How to register with an AET (ABET) centre<\/a>
\nAnyone who did not complete mainstream schooling, and wants to attain qualifications in a flexible environment, may register with any AET centre. The AET centres may give you placement tests to determine whether you are at AET level one, two or three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adult Education Institute<\/a>
They offer ABET levels 1 to 4 by distance learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asifunde Beginner Literacy Course<\/a>
The project developed a basic literacy course for adults, in isiZulu and in Sesotho sa Leboa (Pedi\/Northern Sotho)The Asifunde! materials consist of a Learners Workbook (Zulu and Northern Sotho versions), a writing book for learners who need extra practice, an Educator\u2019s Guide (in Zulu, Pedi\/Northern Sotho and English versions), a set of placement tests, an Educator\u2019s Course, a Co-ordinator\u2019s Course, a set of administration forms and a set of ten readers in each of the languages.The Learner\u2019s Workbook is designed for learners to work through at their own pace and to take them from their first encounter with print in their mother tongue to a point where they can use newly developed literacy skills in a range of situations outside the classroom. It includes exercises in which the use of the literacy and numeracy skills they have learnt is simulated in a range of everyday contexts such as reading notices, writing letters, completing forms, comparing prices and resisting being coerced into signing a detrimental agreement.The Educator\u2019s Guide does not assume expertise on the part of educators and offers step by step instructions for every page in the Learner\u2019s Workbook. Both the Learner\u2019s Workbook and the Educator\u2019s Guide are copyright free for non-profit purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

College SA\u00a0<\/strong>is a registered and fully accredited South African private college that provides occupational education and skills training for adult learners and organisations.\u00a0Their products include accredited qualifications (occupational certificates, learnerships, and AET courses), industry certifications (CIMA, NEBOSH, CompTIA, PMI, etc.), and adult short courses.\u00a0 They are a licensed Skillsoft distributor in Southern Africa, giving learners access to globally recognised certifications (Microsoft, AWS, Oracle, etc.).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operation Upgrade<\/a> (Please note: on the 30th November 2025, this website was not accessible)<\/em>
Operation Upgrade, the oldest nongovernmental literacy organisation in South Africa, battles the problems of poverty, malnutrition, and HIV\/AIDS through literacy development.  Operation Upgrade\u2019s growing network of trained community facilitators works with the poorest and most marginalized of people in South African society. Operation Upgrade\u2019s mission is to assist social change and development in South Africa through the support and provision of adult literacy and adult basic education and training. We work mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the home of the Zulu people, although we will train literacy educators in other provinces.  In KwaZulu-Natal adult illiteracy is high and HIV and AIDS are prevalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was awarded to Operation Upgrade of South Africa, for the “KwaNibela Project”, and continues the Organisation’s 40-year history of commitment and change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Literacy<\/a>
Project Literacy was established in 1973 to address the needs of illiterate and semi-literate adults in South Africa and has more than 30 years of experience in ABET provision. Today Project Literacy is a well-established and highly respected non-governmental organisation (NGO) with experts in the provision of a wide range of Education and Training programmes. With it’s headquarters in Pretoria, Project Literacy’s programmes reach adult learners nation-wide through offices in every province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siyaloba Training Academy<\/a>

In addition to the marine courses, Siyaloba also provides the ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) course, which is the equivalent to a grade 9 qualification. ABET learning is both numeracy and Literacy based and is done through multimedia learning with material provided by Media Works. There are four levels to complete with total duration being on average six months for both the Numeracy and literacy levels combined. . Upon completion of a level and presentation of a Portfolio of Evidence, learners receive a nationally recognised certificate. Situated in Port Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
