How to register with an AET (ABET) centre
Anyone who did not complete mainstream schooling, and wants to attain qualifications in a flexible environment, may register with any AET centre. The AET centres may give you placement tests to determine whether you are at AET level one, two or three.

Gauteng CET College
The GETC-ABET qualification (NQF Level 1) with ID No. 71751 provides adult learners with fundamental basics in general education learning. The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with foundational learning by acquiring knowledge, skills and values in specified learning areas. It also allows learners to choose electives unit standards, which relate to occupational learning relevant to their area of interest or specialisation.

Limpopo Community Education and Training College
Programs offered at the college include Pre-Literacy (foundational numeracy and literacy),  Post Literacy (ABET level 4), Amended Senior Certificate (ASC) and a variety of short skills programmes.

Western Cape Community Education and Training
The Community Education and Training (CET) is a programme that allows you to develop basic literacy skills such as reading, writing and basic problem solving. You’ll receive a nationally recognised certificate and with this qualification, you can improve your chances of finding a suitable job. The General Education and Training Certificate (GETC), a formal qualification, is offered under the guidance of the Western Cape Community Education and Training College (WCCETC). The WCCETC works with Community Learning Centres to carry out training.

North West Community Education and Training Centre
The NWCETC offers AET training from level 1 (Grades 1-3) to AET level 4 (Grades 8-9)

Siyaloba Training Academy
In addition to the marine courses, Siyaloba also provides the ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) course, which is the equivalent to a grade 9 qualification. ABET learning is both numeracy and Literacy based and is done through multimedia learning with material provided by Media Works. There are four levels to complete with total duration being on average six months for both the Numeracy and literacy levels combined. . Upon completion of a level and presentation of a Portfolio of Evidence, learners receive a nationally recognised certificate. Situated in Port Elizabeth.

Operation Upgrade

Operation Upgrade, the oldest nongovernmental literacy organisation in South Africa, battles the problems of poverty, malnutrition, and HIV/AIDS through literacy development.  Operation Upgrade’s growing network of trained community facilitators works with the poorest and most marginalized of people in South African society. Operation Upgrade’s mission is to assist social change and development in South Africa through the support and provision of adult literacy and adult basic education and training. We work mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the home of the Zulu people, although we will train literacy educators in other provinces.  In KwaZulu-Natal adult illiteracy is high and HIV and AIDS are prevalent.

The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was awarded to Operation Upgrade of South Africa, for the “KwaNibela Project”, and continues the Organisation’s 40-year history of commitment and change.
